This 6-lesson unit study will explore Fort Mose, the first legally sanctioned free Black settlement in what is now the United States, established in Spanish Colonial Florida in the 18th century. Students will investigate the community's founding, daily life, cultural significance, and lasting legacy of resilience and freedom in the face of adversity.
